Many nonprofit organizations across the country rely on volunteer drivers to help provide their services.  Sometimes, drivers are needed to bring seniors to doctor’s appointments and other times they are needed to deliver food or entertainment to house bound individuals.  Regardless, anytime someone is required to drive, there is a certain amount of risk involved.  Because of this, it is good to have volunteer vehicle insurance coverage in case something goes wrong.

If volunteer drivers are utilizing vehicles that belong to the nonprofit organization, they will be covered if the nonprofit has a commercial auto insurance policy.  The auto insurance policy should cover three different components.  These are liability, physical damage to the vehicle, and medical payments for injuries to the occupants of the vehicle.

In many cases, volunteer drivers that are working for a nonprofit organization utilize their personal vehicle to do tasks for the nonprofit.  In these cases, the volunteer driver is covered by their personal auto insurance policy.  However, there is an exception to this rule.  If the volunteer driver is involved in a catastrophic accident that ends up costing more than the limits of their personal auto insurance, the excess costs end up becoming the nonprofit’s responsibility.  Because of this, many nonprofits end up purchasing non-owned auto liability insurance.
